The Excalibur celebrated another year of athletics at Trent University on Tuesday March 25, with their Athletic Banquet hosted in the gymnasium. Awards were given to members of Trent’s 14 varsity sport teams. Among the successes this season, the Women’s Volleyball OCAA bronze medal stood above the rest. However, this night was about celebrating the individuals who made Trent varsity athletics competitive this year.
Trent’s most prestigious award is the Arthur Cup an award that is given to two graduating students, for their outstanding contribution to Trent’ athletics programs.
This year both Arthur Cup winners are from Trent’s rowing team. The winners were Danielle Goodwin from Whitby and David Mungham from Newmarket.
Goodwin has been rowing with Trent for four years during her five studying stint at the school. Off the water, Goodwin was noted for volunteer work with Trent’s Food Drive and Movember. This year she was elected as the President of Trent’s rowing club as she was intricate in preparing for the Head of Trent. At the Head of Trent she won a bronze medal in women’s doubles, which Goodwin said was particularly satisfying. “I was racing with Rebecca Webber and it was amazing because she is my roommate and we raced together every year, so it was a nice way to wrap it up.”
Mungham, the other of the Arthur Cup winners, had praise for Goodwin. “It’s really great that Danielle won, she definitely was in an underrated position. She did a lot of work behind the scenes that nobody sees.”
Mungham was proclaimed in a Trent Athletics press release to be “one of the most decorated medalist’s in Trent’s rowing program.” Perhaps most impressive among his accomplishments was two bronze medals at OUAs (Ontario Championships) and participating in National championships. He was also a part of Trent’s rowing executive as the treasurer.
Mungham was happy with the award, but also wanted to thank others. “It’s been fantastic. I cannot say enough about my teammates acknowledging not only the work I do, but everyone else does.”
Looking back on memories with Trent rowing, Mungham couldn’t pick out one that he favoured above others. “It’s hard because everything blends together at five in the morning. It’s not necessarily the winning that is the best memories. I’m surrounded by all my friends and they are the best friends I could ask for. For men and women, Trent rowing has a unique bond.”
The Gary Wolff Award is another prominent award in Trent varsity athletics. The award was given to Brad Keizerwaard for his “dedication and leadership in balancing sport, community involvement and academic performance.” Keizerwaard played on Trent men’s volleyball team, volunteered for Big Brothers mentorship program, while working part-time at the athletic complex. “It means a lot to win this, especially from the people who recognized me. They were people I had a great appreciation for. For them to recognize me for this award is a great feeling,” said Keizerwaard. Next year he will continue to work with Trent Athletics in a coaching role in the volleyball program.
Christian Zimmer, a third-year volleyball player and biology student, was pleased with Trent athletics this year as he reflected at the banquet. “I think it was an excellent year for Trent Athletics as a whole, in particular with the women’s volleyball doing so well at provincials. That does a lot for the program.” Zimmer was leader this past season on the men’s volleyball team, a sentiment you will see reinforced in the list below of campus recreation and team awards.
