The Campus Recreation crew is ringing in the New Year with a bang. With over seven different sports and four epic tournaments in waiting, it is sure to be a fun season. Official Team Registration opens on Monday, January 7, but you do not have to sign up with a team. If you are interested in playing in any of the leagues and do not currently have a team, you can sign yourself to the free agent list. This is a list in which teams can recruit members for their team if they are missing a player or two.
The league sports that the Campus Recreation Center offer include Women’s Shinny Hockey, Indoor Soccer Recreational or Competitive, Competitive Basket Ball, Inner-Tube Ultimate Frisbee and Volley Ball Competitive or Recreational. If you didn’t want to be involved in one of the leagues, but still wanted to play a sport, there are also four different Pick up Sports that you could participate in.
In case you don’t know what is meant by pick up sports, here is a quick recap of what the difference is between the leagues and pick up games. Sport leagues are organized programs with registration, schedules and play-offs. Pick-up sports are regular times for anyone interested in playing the designated sport. There are no officials, just groups of students looking to have some fun. Check out pick-up basketball on Friday nights to see how busy pick-up sports can be.
The Pick Up games are: 1) Badminton on Mondays from 12-2pm 2) Floor Hockey on Tuesdays from 4-5pm 3) Indoor Soccer on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30pm and 4) Basketball on Fridays from 5-7pm.
Along with all the great sports that are being offered, the Campus Recreation crew will be hosting four outstanding tournaments that are bound to be the talk of the town. They are all one-day events that guarantee at least three games per team. The first is a Basket Ball Tournament on January 26, with up to eight team slots open. There is a minimum of 6 players that must be on the roster. The second tournament is the Snow-Ultimate Tournament on February 2. It is basically Ultimate Frisbee in the snow, and is just an awesome excuse to run around and dive in the (hopefully soft) snow. You need at least a minimum of ten players on the roster, with a minimum of five and a maximum of seven players on the field, two of which must be female.
The third tournament is going to be one of the biggest events. This is the Mid-night Madness Varsity Fundraiser Event, which is a giant, recreational, co-ed dodge ball Tournament. It begins on Friday, February 8 at 8:00pm, with the registration deadline being on February 5. There must be a minimum of six players per team, two of which must be female. Upon registration, a minimum Registration Donation Fee & Bond are required. The Campus Recreation crew is looking for volunteers to help run this event. Please contact them if interested at campusrec@trentu.ca.
The last tournament is a Flag Football Tournament on March 16 from 11-5pm. There is an open amount of players allowed per team, but with a maximum of seven players on the court.
There are many ways in which you can register to participate in one of the leagues or tournaments. You can go into the office located in the Athletic Complex, you can send an e-mail to campusrec@trentu.ca, or if you are comfortable posting your personal information on the new Campus Recreation Facebook page, you can comment on a “note” with the following details: League(s) and or Tournament(s) that you are interested in, your full name, your gender, and your e-mail address. All registration deadlines are at 12:00 noon.
The new Facebook page Campus Recreation at Trent U allows you and your friends to view photos of your team, to find a host team or free agents for your team, to give feedback on what leagues and tournament you would like to see in the future, and to also be kept up to date on league standings.
Looking forward to the Winter Leagues!
