Pride Week: Spoken Word Spectacular

Wednesday night’s Pride Spoken Word Spectacular had two of everyone’s favourite things- pride week festivities and poetry. This event is just one of 36 taking place this week in Peterborough as we celebrate our vibrant LGBTQ community through Pride. Hosted by Peterborough Poetry Slam and the Peterborough Pride Committee at Catalina’s, the event truly was spectacular.
Local and not-as-local poets alike shared the stage to create a combination of poems that had just about everything. From cackles to sobs and everything in between- Peterborough poets sure know how to exhume the deepest of emotions. A spirit of unity was almost tangible as we shared stories through poetry- a powerful medium meant for bringing people together.
The night began as it ought to, with a land acknowledgement with indigenous themes continuing as several indigenous poets took the stage throughout the night sharing stories of struggle, strength and indigenous culture. It was refreshing to see a great deal of intersectionality take the stage.
If the rest of the week’s events are as spectacular as this one, you definitely want to attend as many as possible!
