Alright, people! It is winter and that means snow. Luckily for everyone in the Peterborough area, there is Snofest. Snofest is a festival put on throughout the month of January by the city of Peterborough. There are so many events going on that there will definitely be something to entice you out of video games, studying and the internet. From events in the arts, food contests, and out door activities there will definitely be something for all.

The first major event is the Snofest Winter Carnival on Saturday, January 19. It is taking place at the Peterborough Museum and Archives on the Hill from 9am to 3pm. To start off the day there is a FREE pancake breakfast at 9am. Then throughout the day there are outdoor events like mini put-put, sleigh drawn carriages, and games like hockey shootouts. You can also always warm up in the Museum while taking in the exhibit “Lace Up: Canada’s Passion For Skating.” There is also a chili contest from 1pm to 2:15pm. The proceeds from this chili contest will be donated to the Peterborough Youth services, so come out and support a good cause. There will also be a spaghetti dinner at St. Luke’s Church at 566 Armour Road from 5pm to 7pm.

Sunday, January 20 has more musically inclined events. There is Snofest Idol from 2pm to 5pm at the Showplace Performance Centre. Snofest Idol is a contest between eight wonderful singers who can win a first, second and third place price. The night will be filled with great music and great talent. Be sure to come out and enjoy.

If you cannot make it out for this event there are countless others smaller events happening throughout January, like Snofest Bingo. Snofest Bingo is happening throughout the month at various locations, but the next Snofest Bingo is on January 15 from 2pm to 4pm at Royal Gardens, on 1160 Clonsilla Avenue. The one after that is an Adult Snofest Bingo on January 28 from 7pm to 10pm at the Delta Bingo Hall, on 1010 Clonsilla Avenue, where you can receive a bingo package per person for $25.

There are also many events that have to do with the arts and music. For music fans there is the Snofest Jazzfest to look forward to. Snofest Jazzfest is happening from 2pm to 4pm at the Applewood Retirement Centre on Wednesday, January 23. Come out and relax from schoolwork for a few hours while enjoying some good Jazz music. If you are more of an art fan, there is the Living in Colour Youth Art Show and Sale on the Wednesday, January 23 from 4:30pm to 7pm at The Spill. Come out and support your local students and youth in the arts.
