Trent Model UN

Several weeks ago, from Jan. 23 to 26, the a delegation from the Trent Model United Nations worked side by side with student delegates in Montreal.

The conference, McMUN, was hosted by McGill Model United Nations and brought together students from around the world.

Delegates from Trent got the chance to go up against the best from schools like Harvard and West Point.

Working in different communities, delegates wrote, sponsored and argued for and against draft resolutions that could rival those of the UN itself.

Alexander McKee and Alexander Walsh worked on reducing social isolation, improving healthcare for seniors and improving life after 50 in the United Nations Special Session on Aging.

Aaron Allison worked in the United Nations Trusteeship Council on the definition of state, a complex and controversial topic. The committee used Palestine as a focus, and Tyler Murray was involved in an intensive discussion on the creation of new technologies and organizations for comprehensive internet security in the International Telecommunications Union.

The conference saw over 1,400 delegates, 500 staff and a keynote speech from 23rd ambassador and permanent representative of Canada to the United Nations, Guillermo Rishchynski.

All of the Trent delegates left tired but satisfied with the outcome of their efforts at Sunday’s closing ceremonies.

After three days of suiting up, meeting dedicated delegates from universities around the world and expanding our social networks, the future looks brighter than ever before. The lessons learned and experiences shared cannot be compared to anything else – after all, this is Model UN.

As a past delegate, Renzo Costa shared, “The overall experience was fantastic. The conference provided opportunities to test you outside your comfort zone … It is a highly recommendable experience.”
