The world’s atmosphere is almost at the concentration of CO2 to cause a 2 degree Celsius increase in the average global temperature. At this point, climate change could spiral out of control. Yet the known fossil fuel reserves, much of it in Canada, would produce between three and five times the amount of CO2 required to reach this 2 degree Celsius critical point. We cannot let this extra carbon get burned, but Canada has no coherent national policy to address climate change.
Thursday, September 12 at 7 p.m. in the Peterborough Public Library, Guy Hanchet will speak on the science (causes and impacts) of climate change. Guy is a local resident who has been trained by Climate Reality Canada in a session led by former U.S. Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore. The talk will look at climate change at the global, national and regional levels.
He will also present an overview of recent extreme meteorological events and explain the linkages between human activities and the intensification and frequency of events such as floods, droughts and storms. To conclude the presentation, solutions will be presented that can be incorporated and adopted by individuals, businesses and communities to help mitigate climate change. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.
This free event is sponsored by the Peterborough chapter of For Our Grandchildren (4RG), an organization working to connect and empower grandparents and prospective grandparents who are concerned about the impending effects of climate change. Everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.
This talk is a precursor to the CLIMATE CHANGE RALLY being held on Sunday, September 22 from 11 a.m. to noon at Millennium Park, (Water St. at King St.). We need enough people at this rally to show our politicians that they must address climate change aggressively. The rally will feature local musicians and speakers, and an information tent will be present.
In honour of the Purple Onion Festival which follows the rally, people are asked to wear purple, although purple headbands will be available as well. A photo at noon of the 1000 people expected will be sent to the Guinness Book of Records for largest crowd wearing purple. For the community partners sponsoring this event, check out the Facebook page.
Thank you,
Linda and Alan Slavin, For our Grandchildren
