Trent Excalibur played the Loyalist Lancers this past Saturday at the Trent University Athletics Centre. It was a five set thriller, with the Excalibur coming out victorious winning 3-2.
Excalibur showed a lot of passion and determination; after the first two sets, they found their momentum with great spikes from #16 Sarah Norton (Arnprior) and #14 Sarah MacLaren (Renfrew) heating up the court.
Fitness and stamina were key to the ladies winning the fourth and fifth set, as #13 Sam Belsey (Norwood) showed her strength with some great blocks to ensure the Excalibur were victorious.
Head Coach Peter Carter commented: “Hopefully we don’t have too many injuries going into the next game. We have some work to do this week on our defence, but I am very proud of the work rate the girls showed today.”
The Trent Excalibur women’s volleyball team will play another home game on Wednesday, November 28 at 6:00 pm. They have won the last four games and remain undefeated.
Men’s Volleyball
After the women took the floor with the Loyalist Lancers, it was the men’s turn. The game was exciting, but Trent Excalibur lost this time 2-3.
At first, it looked like they could snatch their first win of the season, as Excalibur won the first set 25 – 22. However, this put pressure on the Lancers, who answered back by winning the next two sets 25 – 23 and 25 – 13.
Trent Excalibur came back strong in the fourth set to win convincingly 25 – 16, but were defeated in the fifth and final set. #7 Brad Keizerwaard (Holland) troubled the Lancers throughout the game with a number of powerful spikes. #8 Christian Zimmer (Ingleside) worked tirelessly in defence throughout the five sets, making a number of important blocks.
Head Coach Josh Neadow commented: “Despite the result, we will take a lot from the game. We are feeling optimistic and I know my athletes gave their all throughout the game.”
The Trent Excalibur men’s volleyball will play again on Wednesday, November 28 at the Trent University Athletics Centre at 8:00 pm.
